Mission Leadership Council - May 2017

With the new role for zone leaders, our May MLC focused on leadership training.
The Zone Leaders and Sister Training Leaders pass what they've learned on to newer
elders and sisters.  The encouragement, example and teaching from their peers
helps a lot of missionaries progress and become ready to train those who
come after them.

Crossfit May 2017

After weeks of working out, it's the big day, Crossfit!
We had a lot of tired missionaries for a few minutes,
but they recovered quickly and were soon playing
basketball, soccer, etc.

Near the end, some had dropped out, but Sister Coffeen and
Sister Flores were still going strong.

For most, the best part of the
event was that half the mission was able to see each other
at one time.  It was a chance to renew friendships and
check-up on previous companions.

Two Who Were New!

Moments after the outgoing missionaries went up the
escalator, Sister Alvey and Elder Larsen arrived.

Two arriving and four welcoming, but our intrepid new missionaries
seemed undaunted by being outnumbered!
We were so happy to see them!

Looking Homeward

The last weeks of a mission are tender and terrifying!
Hearts are tender thinking over the memories and
tender contemplating being with family again.  How
could it possibly be over?  How can you possibly go
home?  How can you not?  So much is ahead!  Will you
adjust?  Remember all you've learned?  What
will it be like to walk down a street alone?

It was a beautiful spring evening, so we decided to enjoy
dinner in the backyard.

A moment comes and goes.  This one came and went
without our taking a picture of Elder and Sister Holyoak
who were such a wonderful part of our mission!  During
their service, among many other things, they trained every
missionary in the mission, somemany times, on how to do family
history work.  If you click on this picture you can enlarge it and
see the Holyoaks on the last two chairs on the left.
How we wish we had a better picture!

Sister Nielsen, Sister Peilstick, Sister Lineback, Elder Haltli,
Sister Ogden, Sister Tobler and Sister Blanchard.
Just before giving their last testimonies in the mission field.

After testimony meeting and dessert,
the missionaries gathered with President Mullen
for companion study.

Often this rack is full of the suit jackets of outgoing
elders, but that evening only Elder Haltli's jacket
hung, waiting for a plane ride home.

The next morning, just after breakfast and right
before departing.  Time for last hugs and photos.

Ready for home!

We don't usually invade these pictures, but we wanted a record
of the aprons the outgoing missionaries gave us (along with
chocolates, sea shells, all our favorites).  We'll think of
this group each time we wear our aprons!

A moment of quiet.  Time for a departing prayer.
Then everyone was in the cars and off to the airport.
Suddenly the house was quiet.
Left behind, the scale used to weight the suitcases
and the "miracle stories," of conversions
with an eternal weight of glory.

One last wave good-bye.

In Spring a Young Man's Fancy Turns to Thoughts of... Whiffle Ball!

Spring fever caught up with the senior missionaries
in April and the whiffle ball and bats came out.
Elder Just steps up to plate.  Better back up!
He's apt to knock it across the fence!

Sister Hubbaard, Elder Thorne and Elder Holyoak
watch Sister Thorn round second and head for third base.

Sister Heaton is ready to call strikes.

Sister Thorne puts some spin on the ball.  Elder Heaton
and Elder Thorn are ready.

These look like seriously large hamburgers, but
they're really flank steaks.  After working up
an appetite everyone enjoyed dinner.  These
are fun meals as everyone cooks and brings a
dish to share. Our senior missionaries are
great cooks!  Even better cooks than whiffle ball players!

Out Like a Lion -- Multizone Conferences in March

With the new schedule announced in January,
multi-zone conferences now take place every six weeks.
It's wonderful to have twice the opportunities to
meet with, hear from and learn from the elders and sisters.

Corona Zone

Lake Elsinor Zone

 Mt. Rubidoux

 Menifee Zone

Moreno Valley

 LaSierra Zone

 Jurupa Zone

 Riverside Zone

 Hemet Zone

 San Jacinto Zone

Members provide many kind services for missionaries.
They feed them nightly in their homes
go out on team-ups with them, help them move all
their things from one place to another on transfer days.
One of the nicest things are the luncheons they do during
zone conferences. Each zone conference we leave the gym
at about 11 AM andgo to the chapel.  When we return
an hour later, tables are set, food appears and missionaries
take a welcome break and enjoy lunch together.  We're so
grateful for the kind sisters and brothers who serve
the elders and sisters so well in this way.

Seconds or...

Dessert!

Here is only one of the groups who worked together
to provide lunch for us.

To say "thank you", the missionaries recite "The Standard of Truth"
and then sing "The Armies of Helaman."  After the song,
each missionary shakes the hand of each person who helped
with lunch to thank them personally.
